Valentine’s Heart Cake Recipe

What does a Valentine’s cake look like? It’s a heart-shaped sponge cake filled with luscious chocolate cream—easy to make at home—and topped with glaze or decorated with fruit and swirls of whipped cream.
No special tin? No problem: you can create a heart shape even with a standard round mould.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium eggs
  • 120 g sugar
  • 100 g plain flour
  • 30 g Venchi cocoa powder
  • ½ sachet baking powder
  • 300 g fresh double cream
  • 100 g Venchi dark chocolate

Prep Time: approx. 1 hour
Difficulty: Easy

Method — Chocolate Heart Cake

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Prepare the sponge: whisk the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer. Fold in sifted flour, then add sifted cocoa powder and baking powder, mixing until well combined.
  3. Pour into your tin (heart-shaped or round) and bake for about 30 minutes.
  4. Let the sponge cool, then prepare the chocolate filling: heat the cream almost to boiling, add chopped dark chocolate and stir vigorously until smooth and glossy.
  5. Slice the sponge into two discs, spread the filling, and reassemble.
  • Tip for shaping a heart without a mould: cut a “V” from the bottom half of the round cake, reposition the cut sections at the top—your heart shape is ready!
  1. Chill in the fridge for 15 minutes to set before decorating.

Mini cakes idea: divide the batter into two small tins or bake in a rectangular tin, then cut discs to layer in glass cups or elegant champagne flutes for an eye-catching presentation.

Decorating Your Heart Cake

  • For a classic finish: pipe whipped cream rosettes around the edge and add fresh berries.
  • For chocoholics: glaze with melted dark chocolate for extra crunch, adding crushed hazelnuts for texture.
  • Feeling romantic? Go bold with a red or pink mirror glaze made from white chocolate and a touch of food colouring.
