Chili and chocolate
Sometimes the unlikeliest of pairings are the ones where the magic happens. That’s true for chili and chocolate.
For a more subtle chocolate flavor, we’ve used cocoa powder in the recipe. It balances the acidity of the chili and tomato and infuses a deeper, more complex flavor into the dish.
Remember, the cocoa powder is unsweetened, so it doesn’t make your chili taste like a dessert. Instead, it transforms it into an earthy and rich delight where every spoonful is bursting with flavor.
How to make chocolate chili
Chocolate chili is the ultimate one-pot wonder, both nourishing and exploding with flavor and wholesome ingredients.
How to make chocolate chili? It’s easy. Find a heavy-bottomed pan, such as a Dutch oven, and sautee the onion and spices. Next, cook the meat. Add the remaining ingredients and top with the broth.
Let it simmer for roughly half an hour. With only one pot to clean up, you’ll have an irresistible meal for you, your family, and your guests.
To enhance the taste, let the chili rest for as long as possible before serving.
Ingredients
2 chopped onions
2 jalapenos chilis, seeded and minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
2 lbs ground beef
4 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 tablespoons Venchi cocoa powder
1 large sweet potato
15 oz. can of black beans
15 oz. can of kidney beans
15 oz. can of diced tomatoes
3 cups beef broth
salt and pepper
handful of chopped fresh parsley or cilantro to garnish
Instructions
Find a medium-sized, heavy-bottomed pan. Add olive oil over medium heat.
To the pan, add jalapenos, chopped onions, ground cumin, ground coriander, and chili powder. Stir to prevent sticking. Fry until onions are softened, for about 5-7 minutes.
Add ground beef and season with salt.
As the beef is cooking, use a spoon to break it into smaller pieces.
Once there is no raw meat left, add minced garlic and tomato paste. Stir until well combined. Cook for five more minutes.
Cut sweet potato into half-inch cubes.
To the pan, add sweet potatoes, cocoa powder, black beans, kidney beans, and beef broth.
Season with salt and pepper.
Bring the chili to the boil. Then cover it with a lid and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes.
When chili is ready to serve, garnish with chopped parsley or cilantro. Enjoy!
Variations
Dark chocolate chili
There’s plenty of room for experimentation. For those who love a rich chocolate flavor, you can always add dark chocolate with cocoa powder to the chili sauce. It will truly make chocolate the star of the dish: you’ll be amazed at how effortlessly chocolate and spices pair together in the kitchen.
Mexican chocolate chili
You can easily adjust this recipe to create a Mexican Chocolate Chili. Simply add a bottle of dark beer or ½ cup of dry red wine to the chili sauce. Pour it in when you’ve added the tomato paste, and let the alcohol boil out. It will give more depth and intensity to your dish.
If you’d like to turn up the heat, don’t throw out the seeds of the jalapenos. Instead, add them to the recipe. For those that love smoky flavors, you can always swap out chili powder for chipotle chili powder for extra smokiness.
