What is chocolate stout cake?

Most chocolate stout cake recipes include a tender chocolate sponge with dashes of Guinness and a whipped cream cheese frosting. You can quickly whip up the Venchi recipe for an after-dinner treat. Or invite over loved ones and enjoy it with your afternoon tea or coffee. And it goes without saying that it's the perfect cake to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

It might seem like an odd combination. But dark beers are often described as having chocolatey overtones. Mixed with the chocolate cake, it creates a roasted, almost coffee-like flavor. Discover more about the winning flavors of chocolate and beer pairing here.

In the Guinness chocolate cake, the Guinness gives maximum complexity and richness. Plus, there's a healthy dose of sugar in the recipe to help balance out any bitterness that might come from the beer.

The indulgent chocolate taste in this recipe comes from Venchi cocoa powder. It features a high cocoa butter content that makes it perfect for desserts or garnishing. As well as being deliciously fluffy and sweet, cocoa powder is also beneficial for our health. Discover more about cocoa benefits.

Adding whipped cream to the cream cheese frosting is a game-changer. It creates a delightfully light and frothy topping that's a refreshing finishing touch to the chocolate cake. Once decorated, the delightful white frosting looks like the frothy foam of a perfectly poured stout (or a beer for Americans).

What to serve with chocolate cake? By itself, this dessert's a winner. But tart fruit like raspberries would pair delightfully. It gives the plate a boost of color and freshness.

Can you make the chocolate stout cake ahead of time? Yes. Store the cake without any frosting in an airtight container for five days.

You could even freeze the baked cake for a few months. Cover the cake in a double layer of food wrap. Then take it out of the freezer to thaw for a few hours. You'll have a sweet treat on hand whenever unexpected visitors stop by.

After the cake's been decorated with whipped frosting, keep it in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. But it's unlikely this tasty cake will even last that long!
