Crackers are the perfect choice when you’re looking for a light and simple snack. These thin, crunchy nibbles are delicious on their own or as an accompaniment to dips, charcuterie, and cheeses. Why not treat yourself to these homemade chocolate crackers? Incredibly easy to prepare, they are perfect for an indulgent snack or for surprising your guests with an unusual appetizer!

Chocolate saltine cracker recipe

Many of us are used to buying them in a packet, but saltine and chocolate cracker dough can be prepared in no time at all with ingredients found in any pantry, making them ideal against sudden cravings.

Difficulty: Easy

Preparation time: 10 minutes + 30 minutes for resting the dough

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 sachet baking powder

  • 1/4 cup sugar

  • 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp milk

  • 6 ⅓ tbsp butter

  • Salt to taste

How to make light chocolate crackers

  • Add the milk, sifted flour, baking powder, and sugar to your mixer and start to combine. If you don’t have a mixer, use a whisk to begin and a wooden spoon once the mixture starts coming together.

  • Add the salt, room-temperature butter, and Venchi cocoa, continuing to mix with your fingers until you’ve achieved a smooth and homogenous dough.

  • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for half an hour.

  • Once refrigerated, flatten the dough with a rolling pin until 1/16 of an inch thick, then cut out rectangles measuring 4 ¾ inches long and 2 inches wide. Transfer these to a sheet of baking paper.

  • Finally, prick the chocolate crackers with a fork so they don’t puff up in the oven, brush over with a bit of milk, and sprinkle with granulated sugar to taste before baking at 392°F for approximately 20 minutes.

Once baked, store the chocolate crackers in an airtight container to keep them crisp for several days. Sweet and salty at the same time, they’ll win over young and old alike, but for those with a sweet tooth, you can add cacao nibs to the dough to make these crackers even tastier and crunchier.

Appetizer recipe ideas with saltine crackers

In addition to being perfect for a delicious light snack, these chocolate saltine crackers can also complement several recipes and original appetizers, perfect for delighting guests whilst they wait for the main course or for adding a twist to a menu of simple flavors.

For example, try serving them with a fresh caponata—the ideal appetizer for an unexpected dish like Fassona Tartare with Chocolate (add link to US localized version ofhttps://it.venchi.com/blog/ricetta-tartare-fassona-gourmet) — or using them as a crunchy base for a creamy cheese spread with chopped nuts and a drizzle of honey.

If you’re feeling even more daring, here is a recipe nobody can resist: chocolate crackers with shrimp and stracciatella.

Gourmet Appetizer with Shrimp, Stracciatella, and Chocolate Crackers

Shrimp make for the perfect tasty appetizers, and their pairing with chocolate has the stamp of approval from the greatest chefs.

To make a gourmet appetizer with shrimp, stracciatella, and chocolate crackers:

  1. Carefully clean the shrimp—which should be red, meaty, and flavorful—and sear them in a pan for one minute.

  1. Once done, garnish the crackers with stracciatella and add the shrimp.

  1. Dust with a bit of unsweetened cocoa.

The secret to the success of this shrimp-based gourmet appetizer is in the contrast between the crispy chocolate crackers and the soft toppings. If the stracciatella is too liquid, we recommend draining it for a few minutes to make sure the crackers don’t lose their consistency when the cheese is added.
