Whatever color your clothes, follow the steps below and discover how to get chocolate out of clothes swiftly and simply. The best part? You can do it all with the items you already have at home.

Remember you will have the most success removing any stains the quicker you act. Try to begin the process as soon as you can.

Chocolate is packed with protein, which can harden when heated. So, here is an important reminder on how to remove chocolate stains: heat is the enemy. Do not put clothing in the dryer or use hot water until you are certain that the stain is gone.

  1. Scrape off any excess chocolate: With a butter knife, gently scrape off any dried chocolate. Just be careful not to spread the chocolate onto clean areas of your clothing, making even more work for yourself! Also, if you are working with delicate fabrics like wool and silk, take extra care when trying to remove any excess chocolate bits.

  2. Rinse with cold water: The secret to successful chocolate stain removal is cold water. Why? One of chocolate’s key ingredients is cocoa butter, which melts when heated. If you use hot water, the stain will spread to other areas of your clothing. We all want to avoid this disaster, so rinse your chocolate stains only in cold water, especially when trying to remove white chocolate. It has the highest cocoa butter content of all the varieties.

  3. Treat the stain with liquid detergent: How to remove chocolate stains? With a heavy-duty liquid detergent. It will be your best friend in the laundry room. Apply it to the chocolate stain and gently rub the fabric with your fingers. Leave it for 5 minutes. Then, soak the stained clothes in icy water for 15 minutes. Make sure to gently scrub the stained area with your fingers every 5 minutes.

  4. Rinse clothes: Once you cannot rub away any more of the stain, rinse your garment. Then, clean it as usual in the washing machine. Do not place it in the dryer until you are sure the stain has been removed.

  5. Apply a stain remover: If you have washed your clothing and there is still a stain, it is time to add more heavy-duty products. Some chocolate stains can be harder to remove than others. Dark chocolate, with its deep, complex flavors, is packed with cocoa, which is high in tannins and will sadly leave a darker mark. For those types of stains, apply a stain remover. Then, soak, rinse, and wash again.

How to remove chocolate stains from other types of fabric

Chocolate stains do not just happen on clothes. Sadly, couches and carpets can be prone to accidents. These stains are trickier than the ones on clothing, but they are still doable.

Whatever the location of the chocolate stain, always try to scrape off any excess dried chocolate gently. For stains on velvet or silk upholstery, it is best to call in the professionals. While dry cleaning is the pricier option, doing it at home by yourself is risky.

For stains you want to remove yourself, this is the best method.

Combine one tablespoon of dishwashing detergent with one cup of cold water. Get a clean cloth and dip it into the detergent mixture. Dab it onto the stain, in circular motions starting from the outside and working your way in.

Be careful not to spread the stain around to other clean areas. To finish off, dab the area with a dry cloth. This will remove any excess water. All that is left is to leave the stain to air dry.
